Breathing pulses hover above shallow radio transmissions. The ethereal interference is an arbitrary radar for the re-tuning of the brain’s auditory receptors during a session of decreased audio stimulation.The source material came from a Shakuhachi flute recording by Alcvin Ramos as well as segments of vocal improvisations by singer and harpist Wendy Humphreys. Editing, processing and mixing were done at my home studio and at the sound studio of the artist-run centre Western Front.This composition was commissioned by Vancouver New Music Society and created for a low-power radio transmission during a soundwalk I lead, aerial in hand and radio transmitter in tow, on a nursery farm in the town of Sechelt, British Columbia, Canada. Radio receivers were dotted along the forest’s path followed by the group, weaving in and out of range. It was premiered on September 25th 2004.Like in the original setting where the wandering listener came to pass by the radios broadcasting the piece, here at the Surrey Art Centre it can be experienced from a distance as it blends with the soundscape surrounding the building, or can become the focus of the listening as one comes closer to its source.
